Guillermina Zamora and Yesenia Zamora: Founders of Fundación Esperanza Real
Guillermina Zamora and Yesenia Zamora, two indigenous Miskito women born on Nicaragua’s Atlantic coast, are the founders of Fundación Esperanza Real. Their organization is dedicated to assisting Central American citizens in integrating into new countries after migration, relocating to safer areas within or outside Central America, and returning safely to their communities of origin.
Guillermina Zamora grew up in a Miskito community where violence and marginalization were everyday challenges. From a young age, she showed a passion for social justice, inspired by her people’s traditions that value community and the land. With a background in Anthropology and Community Development, Guillermina acquired knowledge that she later applied in creating culturally sensitive programs for the integration and well-being of migrants. Her approach is always holistic, recognizing the importance of culture, language, and traditions in the adaptation process.
Yesenia Zamora, on the other hand, has focused on Human Rights, driven by the stories from her own community and the need to protect the rights of indigenous peoples and migrants. Her work in this field has given her deep insight into the legal and bureaucratic struggles migrants face. Yesenia has been instrumental in developing strategies that facilitate access to services, obtaining legal status, and advocating for the rights of those seeking refuge or return.
Fundación Esperanza Real was born from Guillermina and Yesenia’s shared vision that Central American migrants deserve not just to survive but to thrive. The foundation offers:
Integration Program
Helping migrants learn the local language, understand host cultures, and access educational and employment opportunities.
Return Assistance
Providing legal, psychological, and financial support for those wishing to return to their countries of origin, ensuring they do so safely and with conditions to reintegrate into their communities.
Safe Relocation
Identifying and facilitating moves to areas within or outside Central America where security and opportunities are greater.
Under the leadership of these two Miskito women, the organization also focuses on preserving and promoting indigenous culture, understanding that cultural identity is key to the well-being of migrants. Guillermina and Yesenia have built networks with other indigenous communities, NGOs, and governments to provide a broad and effective support system.
Their legacy is one of hope and tangible action. Through Fundación Esperanza Real, they have shown that with empathy, knowledge, and a deep connection to the communities they serve, it is possible to transform lives and build bridges between cultures, countries, and people.
